The more creative you are, the better chance people will be interested in your writing and read it. This doesn't just have to stay in lines with writing a story, it can also come in use when writing a birthday card, or making a present. To "think outside the box" as people say is a helpful technique. I remember seeing this in my 5th grade classroom, and seeing an outlined box with those words above it, and my 5th grade mind not really understanding what it meant. But as I came to do more writing I understood the saying more and tried to put it more into use.
You can also be creative with simple ordinary things, such as changing up your routine in the morning, or not reading the Time Out section in the paper first... changing up your regular habits to make a more non redundant/boring/mediocre lifestyle. The same goes for writing, perhaps finding a different way to approach a sentence, or a new and unique way of describing a girl's red lipstick than what's been used before.
I think most people like something new, and like changes for the most part. (Like a new schedule for next semester, or a lot of people who are coming over for Thanksgiving Dinner who aren't relatives, a new job, or the changing colors of the autumn leaves). And when changes occur, sometimes creativity can help you explore how to deal with those changes, and possibly using them for a writing idea.
So don't be afraid to fish for your imagination, until you find what you are looking for.
